The AKTIV Center at Summit Health

Summit Health Cares and AKTIV Against Cancer are proud to announce a new partnership aimed at promoting exercise as a critical component of cancer treatment and survivorship. A growing body of research shows that regular physical activity not only reduces fatigue and emotional distress during cancer treatment, but also significantly enhances the effectiveness of traditional therapies such as surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation.

Through this partnership, AKTIV Against Cancer and Summit Health Cares will design and launch a world-class fitness program for Summit Health cancer patients that will support cancer patients throughout treatment and into survivorship—empowering them with the science-backed benefits of exercise to enhance both physical and emotional well-being.

Partnering with Summit Health Cares allows AKTIV to integrate structured exercise programs directly into patient care, ultimately improving treatment outcomes and quality of life. This collaboration is especially meaningful, as it brings together our expertise with Summit Health’s deep commitment to patient-centered care.

Opening in 2026 in the lower level of Bensley Pavilion in Berkeley Heights, NJ, the new AKTIV Center will offer free, professionally guided exercise programs to cancer patients undergoing treatment. Powered by Summit Health Cares and based on the AKTIV Against Cancer model, the center is rooted in the science-backed belief that physical activity is a critical part of cancer care—improving outcomes, strength, and overall well-being.

AKTIV takes an individualized approach to care, creating personalized exercise plans based on each patient’s diagnosis, treatment, and side effects. Participants will have one-on-one sessions with an AKTIV coach to assess their needs and goals.

Under guided supervision, patients will engage in oncology-focused fitness sessions that may include:

  • Strength training

  • Aerobics

  • Pilates

  • Yoga

  • Walking groups

  • And more

Science-Backed Intensity. Personalized for You

Our HIIT sessions follow the American College of Sports Medicine’s guidelines for cancer patients—working toward 75 minutes of vigorous cardio and two strength sessions per week. But we know everyone starts from a different place. Each class is scaled to your fitness level and treatment stage, with personalized intervals that build endurance, strength, and confidence at a safe, effective pace. It’s not about pushing past limits—it’s about reclaiming your strength, one step at a time.

Purposeful Exercise for Cancer Recovery

Staying active during and after cancer treatment can help reduce fatigue, improve circulation, and boost your immune system. Exercise also enhances flexibility, endurance, mood, and mental clarity—supporting both body and mind throughout your healing journey. All classes are led by trained instructors and tailored to meet you where you are, with a focus on safety, comfort, and progress.
